hi, i'm a newb.

about to get lvl 5, what should my sub proffesion be?

i'm thinking ranger for pet, warrior for more toughness or elementalist for more dps

any hints?

I like the Ritualist.

Fast Cast healing, weapon spells, hard rez, condition removal, ash spells.

When I'm finished with my Tyria profession free skills (started off as Me/Mo, then went to Me/R, then Me/E, Me/N, Me/W), then I'll go into Cantha and become Me/A, then Me/Rit, then Me/D, then Me/P (then back to Me/Rit).

I just don't like the look of an oriental mesmer.

Necromancers are the best for synergy. I have a N/Me, that is why I didn't start with a Me/N (I don't really like having the same combos).

Mesmer's main attribute is Fast Casting, Rangers and Warriors do not cast spells, so there is little synergy. Serpents of Quickness is good from the Ranger. Flurry is good with Illusionary Weaponry from the Warrior.

Test out all of the professions before you decided which is the best for you.

Me/E for damage

Me/Mo for support

Me/Rt for damage or support with Fast Cast

Me/N for degeneration in Illusion combined with Curses

Me/W for IW and running

Me/D no real purpose, so i suggest not going dervish

Me/P same as above

Me/A nice for hexing and conditions

Me/R not a great choice because their skills dont really synergize

start with Me/Mo if for nothing else than to heal yourself.... later on though I suggest trying a Me/N becasue the necro curses go REALLY well with some of the mesmer spells.

Me/N will provide the best results because the hexes go really well but when your just starting out go Me/Mo for healing and hard rez. You can also try if you have just mesmer skills go Glyph of Lesser Energy which i find works amazing for energy management even with the update since most of your skills are 10 energy.

i'm new, so i dont understand the benefits of one primary over another

nor do i yet understand lingo like glyphs etc

Depends on what you want to do. If you want a large energy pool but dont care about casting times, and want your runes to be in the elemental attributes and energy storage, go E/Me. If you can make due with a small energy pool and want skills that ativate quickly and have attributes in either domination, illusion, or inspiration with a wide variety of energy gaining skills, you will want to go Me/E. It all depends on your preferences. E/Me is more useful in PvP in my opinion, and Me/E is more useful in PvE.

Dean Harper basically covered your question.

Glyphs are elementalist skills that are sometimes used for energy management. Case in point: Glyph of Lesser Energy. This will reduce the cost of at least 1 spell (depending on your Energy Storage attribute level - thanks to the new update

) by x energy. You can only have 1 glyph active at a time, if you try to use two (glyph of lesser energy and glyph of energy (e)), then GoLE dissappears. They only affect spells, not other skills (like plague touch).

Runes are magical inscriptions that can be placed on armor, but you can only have 1 rune of a specific time utilized. An example is:

You can have 1 Minor Rune of Fast Casting, 1 major rune of Domination Magic, 1 Superior Rune of Vigor, 1 rune of attunement, and 1 minior rune of Inspiration Magic.

You cannot have 1 minor rune of domination and 1 major rune of domination. Only one will be active, the other rune is useless.

Runes and some insignias are class specific, meaning you can only use them if your primary profession is that class. An example is E/Me can use Elemental runes, but not mesmer runes.
